John Oliver Secondary School will be celebrating its 100 year anniversary with a public celebration event this weekend on Friday and all day Saturday, September 21 and 22. The event starts at 4 pm on Friday afternoon with registration followed by the opening assembly and concert featuring a number of community and school bands and choirs from 7 pm to 8:30. 

"John Oliver is a school grounded in the rich and storied history of Vancouver," said the school's principal Tim McGeer. "This anniversary is an excellent opportunity to celebrate not only the achievements of the school and its many graduates in the past but also to showcase the future of the school - the many outstanding students we have at John Oliver today. This will be a very enjoyable weekend for grads, students and members of the community."

Saturday sees a full day of activities starting with a pancake breakfast at 9 am, a multi-cultural food fair beginning at noon and a wide variety of performances throughout the day. Live music by 1^st Generation will take place from 4 pm to 8pm as the John Oliver community celebrates "Dancing through the Decades." There will also be student art exhibits, and choir and music performances as well as vintage cars on display.

The "decades" rooms will be open Friday from 4 pm and all day Saturday for graduates to catch up with friends from their years at John Oliver, a movie of the school's history (called JO by the Numbers) will be presented and a book by Ken MacLeod on the history of the school will be launched. There will also be informal "chew and chat" opportunities in the cafeteria Friday from 5 pm to 10 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 10 pm.
