Life Skills (LS)
Program Description
The Secondary Life Skills Programs are small supportive classes for students with Autism, Physical Disabilities, Deaf/Blind, Chronic Health and who have a Moderate to Severe /Profound Intellectual Disability. Students in this program earn an Evergreen certificate upon school leaving.
Curriculum Emphasis:
- communication skills
- functional academic skills
- teaching appropriate behavioural and social emotional skills
- independent daily living skills
- work experience where appropriate
- transition to post-secondary options
- providing social emotional programming
- community awareness
Student Profile
- meet the Ministry criteria for Physical Dependent (A), DeafBlind (B), Moderate to Severe Intellectual Disabilities (C), Autism (G) and/or Chronic Health Impairment (D)
- Moderate to Severe/Profound Intellectual Disability
Referral Process
Life Skills referrals are to be submitted to the District Case Manager, Inclusion.
Documentation Required
- completed “Request for Designation &/or Special Education Program Placement” form
- completed “Pre-Referral Intervention Strategies” (PRIS) form
- Psycho-Educational Assessment
- Individual Education Plan (IEP)
- Speech Language Assessment
- School Based Team minutes
Placement Evaluation
Student placement is reviewed every spring with the goal of returning students to their home schools. A transition plan between the Life Skills program staff and the receiving school is developed

1 Teacher and SSA support (level dependent on student need)
