District Athletics

All of our extracurricular athletic activities are made possible thanks to the volunteers who dedicate their time to providing opportunities for our students.

VSSAA

The Vancouver Secondary Schools Athletic Association (VSSAA) is the governing body for all extra-curricular sports leagues and activities in Vancouver’s 18 secondary schools under the Vancouver School Board (VSB). The VSSAA is responsible for scheduling competitions, organizing championships, and managing policies and rules at the local level. It also supports zone qualifications for provincial championships overseen by BC School Sports (BCSS), the provincial body that governs secondary school athletics in British Columbia. All 18 VSB secondary schools are members of BCSS and must adhere to its policies and guidelines.

The VSSAA is led by an elected Executive Board composed of VSB teachers. Each secondary school has an athletic director who oversees its athletic programs. The Board of Governors- comprised of the principals of the 18 member schools- provides organizational oversight. As the coordinator of all extra-curricular secondary school athletics, the VSSAA operates in alignment with policies set by VSB senior management.

VEPAA

The Vancouver Elementary Physical Activity Association (VEPAA) includes all elementary schools within the VSB. Its primary purpose is to organize extra-curricular athletics and activities-primarily held after school-for member schools.

VEPAA is governed by an elected board made up of VSB teachers, staff, and school administrators. Throughout the school year, the association coordinates a range of leagues, meets, and events.

VEPAA actively promotes the ideals of Fair Play. Its programs are designed to provide all interested students with the opportunity to participate while encouraging sportsmanship, leadership, cooperation, and skill development. These goals are fostered in a supportive, structured, and friendly competitive environment, helping students build both athletic ability and self-esteem.

Scheduling Considerations

Both VEPAA and VSSAA schedule athletic activities in accordance with Ministry of Education instructional days, statutory holidays, and professional development (Pro-D) days. Every effort is made to align with school and district calendars to maximize accessibility for students. However, due to logistical constraints, it is not always possible to accommodate all religious holidays observed by individual families. Participation in all extra-curricular sports activities is voluntary and not required by schools.
