Program Description

Outreach is a senior Alternative Program, located in the Britannia Community Complex above the Britannia Public Library. Outreach was created to provide a safe, welcoming, and successful learning environment to Indigenous students who face barriers and/or systemic obstacles in regular classes. Non-Indigenous applicants who are interested in contributing and participating in a program with an Indigenous mindset will also be considered. Outreach supports students’ academic goals for Grades 10-12 courses, leading to a BC Secondary Graduation Certificate (Dogwood Diploma). Staff can assist students to access post-secondary education, vocational/trades training and/or employment opportunities.

Students at Outreach benefit from the integration of the First People’s Principles of Learning in all aspects of the programming.

• Learning ultimately supports the well-being of the self, the family, the community, the land, the spirits, and the ancestors.
• Learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential, and relational (focused on connectedness, on reciprocal relationships, and a sense of place).
• Learning involves recognizing the consequences of one‘s actions.
• Learning involves generational roles and responsibilities.
• Learning recognizes the role of Indigenous knowledge.
• Learning is embedded in memory, history, and story.
• Learning involves patience and time.
• Learning requires exploration of one‘s identity.
• Learning involves recognizing that some knowledge is sacred and only shared with permission and/or in certain situations.

Referral Process

The student’s current VSB case manager or administrator can submit the application found here. 

All referrals are reviewed to determine program suitability relative to individual student needs. Successful applicants will be contacted by the Program Teacher or Youth and Family Worker to arrange an intake meeting with the student and their caregiver.
